Though it may not come as a surprise to some California residents, another one of the Kardashian women has taken strides to become single again. This time it was Khloe Kardashian who headed to divorce court. Last week she filed for divorce from her husband of four years, Lamar Odom, citing irreconcilable differences.
The couple took measures to draw up a cut-and-dry prenuptial agreement back in 2009 before they got married. As with most prenuptial agreements, each party will retain ownership of property they brought into the marriage. This particular agreement has some interesting clauses that will benefit Khloe over Lamar.
As with most gifts, it is rumored that Khloe will retain her $1 million engagement ring, along with all other gifts that Lamar gave her before and during their marriage. In a strange twist, it appears that she will also keep their $4 million home, which was acquired after they were married. The agreement apparently states that Khloe is entitled to $500,000 for each year that the two were married.
Khloe could still ask for spousal support in addition to that, although she can only petition for spousal support for half the duration of their marriage, or in this case, two years. The prenup reportedly keeps Lamar from petitioning for and being granted any spousal support. Sources indicate that neither one will be asking for spousal support, however.
According to estimates, Lamar’s net worth is around $100 million, while Khloe’s is only around $18 million. The strangest clause of their prenup, however, is that Khloe is the sole beneficiary on a $10 million life insurance policy on Lamar, and the policy is allegedly iron-clad. It seems like an odd thing to include in a prenuptial agreement, but it could be an indication that perhaps four years ago, the couple really did think their marriage would last forever.
There are countless reasons that marriages fail. It’s unlikely that the public will ever really know the whole truth about what caused Khloe and Lamar’s marriage to fall apart. As sad as it may seem, at least this California couple went into the union prepared for the worst, even if they were hoping for the best. In case it came to divorce, they had taken the proper steps to protect their assets.
