How Can Social Media Help with Divorce Notifications

How can social media help with divorce notifications in North County San Diego?  When a California resident decides that divorce is the right thing for him or her, there numerous tasks that must be completed, including informing the other spouse of the decision.  In most cases, this is done by serving notice directly to the other person involved, but what about when the spouse in question is making it difficult to reach them?

In a case out of New York, this exact situation came up.  One female spouse was seeking a divorce while her male partner was making it next to impossible to find him.  Countless attempts were made, even going so far as to hire a private detective to find the man, all with no success.  The only place the woman could find her soon-to-be ex-spouse was on Facebook.  Eventually, after this search had gone on for some time, she requested a judge to allow her to serve the papers via the social media platform.  Due to the extreme nature of the unsuccessful search, the judge granted the request.

In this extreme case, it is noted that the woman had to go through several steps before the judge would allow her to use Facebook as a final means of delivering the notice of divorce.  However, with the increasing importance of social media in the world, it may not be long before lawmakers begin to state exact circumstances that social media may be used to serve legal notices.
When seeking a divorce, remember that each case is different, and laws can vary greatly from state to state.
