Studies Look at Factors which can Predict Divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2019 | Divorce

What can we learn when studies look at factors which can predict divorce?  People in California whose parents got a divorce might be more likely to get one themselves than those whose parents stayed married.  Multiple nationwide studies identified this and other factors that could predict the likelihood that a couple will remain together.

Studies have also found that couples with dissimilar levels of alcohol consumption had a higher likelihood of divorce.  Another predictor was the cost of the wedding.  Couples who spent less than $1,000 had the lowest chance of divorcing while those who spent more than $20,000 had the highest.  Women with a religious background were less likely to leave their marriages than those without one.  More attractive couples also had a higher likelihood of divorce.

When couples had a child in the first seven months after the wedding, they were more likely to get a divorce.  Couples whose firstborn child was a daughter also had a higher divorce rate.

Individuals who earned at least bachelor’s degrees had a lower rate of divorce than those with only a high school diploma or who did not finish college.  Individuals who got married in their late 20s or early 30s had the lowest divorce rate.  People who got married older or younger than this age range had a higher risk for divorce.  Finally, someone who has been married before is more apt to get divorced again in later marriages.

Many studies look at factors which can predict divorce, but every marriage is genuinely unique.  However, these factors can also contribute to a more complex divorce.

For example, couples that spent a lot of money on their wedding also might have more assets, leading to complications when it comes to property division.  Couples with children will have to make decisions about custody visitation and parenting time or ask the judge decide.
